Regular Training on International Patient Communication Skills
At Royal Lee Hospital, every international patient is deeply understood: the regularization of communication skills training for international patients.
To further improve the quality of services for international patients and enhance the cross-cultural communication capabilities of medical staff across the hospital, the hospital successfully held a special training session on "International Patient Services and Communication Skills" on the afternoon of October 23.
The training specially invited Professor Zhong Jiayan, Chairman of the Indonesia Overseas Chinese Federation (China) and Chief Overseas Medical Consultant of the hospital, and Professor Xu Kecheng, a "Model of the Times", recipient of the "Norman Bethune Medal", and founder of the Guangdong Xu Kecheng Health Care Studio, to share and exchange experiences. Nearly 80 medical staff and relevant department personnel participated in the training.

The Art of Cross-Cultural Medical Communication
As the first Chinese female instructor at the Indonesian Ministry of Defense Training School, Professor Zhong Jiayan opened her speech with her rich experiences in Indonesia. Her cross-border experiences from the business sector to national defense education, and then to medical charity, have made her deeply understand the importance of the concept that "language is the window to the world" in medical care.
"Medical communication is not only verbal exchange but also spiritual dialogue." Professor Zhong Jiayan emphasized that special attention should be paid to the language needs of elderly patients in communication, and humanistic care should be provided according to the psychological characteristics of cancer patients.
It is this heartfelt care that has allowed Professor Zhong Jiayan to go further and further on the road of charity and medical care, making everyone more deeply understand the true meaning of "the benevolence of doctors".
The Wisdom and Innovation of Chinese-Style Cancer Control
With his profound medical attainments and rich clinical experience, Professor Xu Kecheng proposed that the only way out for cancer treatment is continuous reform, and reform is endless. The survival of patients is the fundamental principle.
He also profoundly explained the core concept of "Chinese-style cancer control" - "simultaneous elimination and transformation". It is necessary not only to "eliminate" tumor masses but also to improve the cancer-bearing body's ability to fight cancer, especially immune function, and to transform the cancer cells themselves. Finally, the cancer cells are suppressed or dormant, allowing the body to coexist with cancer and survive healthily for a long time. This is what traditional Chinese culture refers to as "yin-yang balance" and "yin-yang neutralization".
Professor Xu Kecheng pointed out that modern commonly used "elimination methods" (surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy) cannot completely "cure" cancer, and coexistence is the main theme. Adopting different methods to control cancer cells, allowing cancer cells to "coexist" with humans, and turning cancer into a manageable chronic disease is an ideal goal and strategy that can be achieved through efforts.
From six dimensions including philosophy, team, technology, equipment, environment, and service attitude, Professor Xu Kecheng systematically explained how to break through the current predicament of anti-cancer and cancer control, opening up a new path full of cultural wisdom for tumor treatment.
Training Illuminates a New Direction for Medical Services
In her concluding speech, Vice President Ma Lanying highly affirmed the sharing achievements of the two professors and emphasized the strategic significance of this training. She pointed out that Professor Zhong Jiayan's cross-cultural service concept and Professor Xu Kecheng's Chinese-style cancer control thought have provided important guidance for the hospital to build an international medical service system.
In the future, the hospital will regularly carry out cross-cultural communication training to build a medical team truly with international vision and service capabilities.
This training not only improved the professional skills of medical staff but more importantly, laid a solid foundation for Guangzhou Royal Lee Cancer Hospital to build an international medical service system. By integrating cross-cultural communication wisdom with traditional Chinese medical concepts, the hospital will play a greater role in serving patients from Southeast Asian countries and promoting international medical cooperation.

This is not only a journey of academic exchange but also a vivid epitome of friendly cooperation between China and Indonesia in various fields such as medical care, culture, and industry. It is hoped that in the future, the two parties will take this exchange as a starting point, continue to deepen cooperation, elevate the friendly relations between the two parties to a new height, and jointly write a beautiful chapter of mutual benefit, win-win results, and joint development.
